A red-letter day.
After months of uncertainty, today we received excellent news: our building project is finished! Many thanks to Cameron at Architecture for Humanity for sending us the photos that follow.I can't even express how proud we are of these pictures. It leaves me speechless to think that an actual building sits on the dusty plot of land we found when we arrived at Palmyra almost a year ago. The final product is beautiful, and I feel nothing but gratitude to everyone who made sure construction continued on the building after Lauren and I left India... not to mention everyone at home who supported us. We wouldn't have these pictures if it weren't for you!
Apparently, these photographs are a month or so old; hopefully soon we'll be able to post photographs of the space in use.
In other news:
1. Architecture for Humanity has recently published Design Like You Give a Damn – an almanac of sorts about humanitarian design projects around the world. I've not yet seen the book, but I'm sure it's a wonderful resource if you're interested to learn more about these projects (and apparently Lauren and I are mentioned in the introduction). Proceeds support AFH projects around the globe: http://www.architectureforhumanity.org/designlikeyougiveadamn/
2. Our good friend Mary from UC is currently working on a project of her own in a village not far from where we stayed. Check out her progress at: http://www.mary-in-india.blogspot.com/
Now, photos. Comments are very much appreciated.

I bet this made your DC day! I know it must have been difficult to wait, uncertain of the outcome, for so long. And here it is! A gorgeous, important structure erected from the inspiration, dedication and heart of two wonderful people. Love, Lauren M
Travis, I've gone through and read some of the earlier blogs up to your most recent, I've enjoyed reading about all of your experiences and seeing the pictures. Hard to believe the extremely different ways of life existing on the same globe. Congratulations on all of your hard work and successful outcome. Glad we ran into each other in Cinci. Take care and good luck at Yale!! I look forward to hearing about your work in the future.
Travis and Lauren,
It looks beautiful, and the fact of the matter is... it takes my breath away to know that you are able to come up with such a product.
Good luck with your current paths and I'm sure we'll cross again soon.
