Thiruvanama-what?

Yesterday we decided to take advantage of the one-day weekend to do some traveling. Jürgen and Sabina suggested we take a taxi to Thiruvannamalai - one of the five holy temple towns of Tamil Nadu.

We hired a cab for the entire day for the price of 1000 rupees (approximately $25), which showed up at 8:00 am sharp. We stopped for tea at a roadside stall halfway through the two hour journey, where we had a chance to get to know Shiva, our driver. Once we arrived in town, he earned every penny of his fee by taking us into the inner chambers of the temple for a Hindu puja blessing - something we've been too intimidated to do on our own.

Shiva also joined us on a trek to the top of the extinct volcano adjacent to the temple, for panoramic views over the city. Words can't express the beauty of it all, so check out the photos. Notice in third photo how immense the temple gateways are - that's us in the middle.
